“Bach — Joy and Laughter”

This concert explores Bach’s use of ‘joy motifs’ and the portrayal of laughter.
The featured work is the famed Magnificat BWV 243. Other works include the
grand opening chorus from Cantata 110, Unser Mund sei voll lachens, the lovely
duet for soprano and alto from Cantata 78, Jesu, der du meine seele (sung by the
women of the chorus), and Cantata 10, Meine Seele erhebt den Herren (sometimes
referred to as Bach’s ‘German’ Magnificat). Bachophiles will not want to miss this
concert of well-known music combined with unfamiliar gems.


“Voice and Percussion”

Our second concert features music for chorus and percussion instruments.
Highlights include music by the venerable American composer Vincent Persichetti,
the sensational young composer Osvaldo Golijov (named 2006 Composer of the Year
by Musical America), the esteemed Estonian Veljo Tormis, and the NYC premiere
of a work by Steve Heitzig, a composer commissioned by Chanticleer and the
Santa Fe Desert Chorale.

Following our immensely successful collaboration with the Astoria Symphony
Orchestra in a performance of the Brahms Requiem this past season, we are
pleased to join forces again and present Mendelssohn’s monumental and
impassioned oratorio Elijah.

The Central City Chorus joins the critically acclaimed Park Avenue Chamber Symphony in a performance honoring Ludwig van Beethoven’s 180th memorial year. This benefit concert at Riverside Church will support music education programs in New York City.
